I was there with my family, well not my whole family. One of my sisters couldn’t join us, she had to work. My dad was already in America, he had been working there since Tuseday so it was me, my mother and my sister who flew to the other side of the world all alone. It went fine until my mum had to speak english and go through the security check. She didn’t know left and right in english and it was kind of embarrising.
After the security check, we took a cab to the hotel we were staying at. My dad had already checked us in so we just left our bags in the hotel room and went for a walk in Time Square. It was really awesome, no picture in the world can describe the feeling of standing there and see all the people and everything light up. It’s unbelivable and I don’t even know how to describe it. We were very tired after the eight hour long flying so we went back to our hotel and got straight in to bed.
Day 1
We woke up early the next day because of the time difference. We ate breakfast in a small café next to our hotel and then we started the sightseeing. We went to the 9/11 museum and the memorial, The Empire State Bulding and to China Town. We went to a lot more but those were the ones that I think were the most exciting.
We went to China Town and that was really cool. It was like the moment you came in there it was only chinese people. I saw them everywhere and it felt like I was in China for a moment. We went through a small park and it felt like we had gotten to the wrong place. They stared at us and it was kind of awkward but fun at the same time. We also went into some shops and some of the things were disgusting. Like these shrimps and the other thing that we think is chicken.
The most exciting thing were the Empire State Bulding, without any doubt. We took the stairs from floor 80 to floor 86. When I stood there and looked out on New York City all I could think was ‘wow’ and ‘what if someone drops their phone’.
We also were at the 9/11 memorial, it was really touching and I was close to tears while walking around in the museum. It was quotes from people on the hijacked planes, the firemen, family to the victims and some of the survivors inside the twin towers written on the walls. After the museum we went to the memorial, it was a huge security check before we could go in there. It was really beautiful inside of the memorial. They have done waterfalls where the twin towers once stood, and around them are the names of all the people who died inside the towers. In the middle of the two waterfalls stands the survivor tree, it survived the attack and it is still living.
The rest of the day, we just walked around and took everything in. Everything is so big here. Look at the Powerrade for example, its huge if you compare it with the ones from Sweden.
Day 2
We started the day with a real american breakfast. It was a lot of food and we were full after eating only half of the food on our plates. I ate american pancakes with syrup, it was good but I prefer the ordinary pancakes with jam. The american bagels are fantastic, they are really delicious.
This day was all about shopping, our first big stop were Victoria Secret. It was three floors and we were in there for nearly two hours. It was very cheap if you compare it to Sweden. Most of the things in America are. For example, I bought a pair of training shoes for almost half of the Swedish price.
We also went to Hollister and Abercombie. The line in to the Abercombie store on fifth avenue was the biggest line I’ve ever seen to get in to a shop. We googled and saw that there was another one close to the Brooklyn bridge, we walked there and it was much calmer.
After almost nine hours of walking and shopping, we went to our hotel room and rested for a bit before we went out on the streets again. We took another walk on Time Square and we discovered how much you can see and do. We thought we hade done a lot of sightseeing but we hadn’t even done half of the things we could do. The NBC studios, where F.R.I.E.N.D.S and House are shooted, has a studio tour we didn’t go on. If I visit New York again, that will be high up on my ’to do’ list.
Before we headed back to our hotel room, we went into a supermarket. I found Nutella Sticks that I felt the need to buy and taste. They tasted like heaven (like everything with nutella) and I hope they come to Sweden really soon.
Day 3
It was the last day and the sun was shining bright. A perfect day for a visit to Central Park. We rented bikes and took us thorugh the whole Park. It was really fascinating that you just went from the streets with a lot of noise and high bulidnings in to a beatiful park with ponds and really nice trees and flowers.
We also saw an example of an american gym class. Everyone had the same clothes and everyone were active and did their best. It was kind of cool to see, because everyone just had a great time together.
It was really warm and in the sun it was about twenty degrees so we paused and took a soda and an ice cream. Then we sat on a park bench and just relaxed. It was really nice and very peaceful.
We did some more shopping and took a final coffe and frappucino from Starbucks. We also got the chance to see a cop sitting in a NYPD car, eating a pizza. Just like in the movies. When I think about it, a lot of things in New York are just like the movies show while other things are not.
A guy from the hotel drove us to the airport and we got ready to say goodbye to New York and hello to Stockholm.
I want to visit New York again, because there are so many things I never had the chance to see and explore. I had a great time and it was a lot of fun. If you ever visit New York, my advice to you is to have good shoes on your feet and do not wear converse.
